CHAPTER 6

After what felt like an hour and a number of weirdly specific insults, the J and J duo moved on, seemingly having forgotten why they were sitting by the SUV.

Even still, we waited a few minutes longer before getting our packs on and begun crawling through the concrete tunnel that looked the most travelled.

“And you’re sure we’ll find rats down here?” Hope asked from the back of the line.

“I’m just going off the hole,” I replied as we crawled, my weak flashlight illuminating the opening at the other end but not much else, “either we’ll run into rats or we’ll reach an outlet with something cool.”

“My bet’s on rats.” Morgan said before giving me a tap on the foot.

“Gross.” I muttered after looking over my shoulder as best as I could and seeing the mossy green scale she was holding with her fingers outstretched in front of her.

Sticking my flashlight between my teeth, I pushed my gun up another few feet so the barrel was pointing out our exit and squeezed past it, poking my head out and scanning for any signs of immediate danger.

There was maybe a five foot drop from the hole to the three feet wide ledge below and then another eight foot drop to the significantly wider waterway.

“Mind grabbing my feet?” I asked with a significant lisp, my flashlight still in my mouth, while pulling my gun out and doing my best to get it all the way down without dropping it.

“Just be careful,” Morgan said as she grabbed my boots and I started shuffling out, “don’t need you paralyzing yourself.”

“As long as you don’t drop me, I reckon I’ll be fine.” I joked, the top half of me already out.

Spider-maning my way down the cold concrete wall in an effort to prepare for the moment I had to catch myself on the floor, I thought to myself about how we probably should have had the lightest person go first.

“Oop!” Morgan exclaimed as I slipped from her grip, ending with me unceremoniously crumpling to the floor and doing everything in my power to fall sideways onto the ledge and not backwards into the waterway, “Sorry!”

“It’s fine,” I lied, spitting the flashlight out and clacking my tongue against the roof of my mouth in a futile effort to get rid of the metallic taste, “give me a second and I’ll help you get down.”

“I’m good,” Morgan said, barely straining from where she hung by her toes and stood on her hands, “are you though?”

“Yeah,” I replied as I got to my feet and watched her cartwheel in the opposite direction to where I slumped, “remind me to let you go first next time.”

“Definitely,” Morgan said with a big smile, getting ready to receive her and Hope’s guns from the hole, “so far, so good, huh?”

“Other than some scuffing, I’d say so.” I agreed, the moment of not actively doing something bringing attention to all the scrapes and cuts on my back, stomach, and now hands, “We should invest in some gloves soon.
